Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. They believe affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities. Habitat works together with families, local communities, volunteers and partners from around the world so that more people are able to live in affordable and safe homes. Their advocacy efforts focus on policy reform to remove systemic barriers preventing low-income and historically underserved families from accessing adequate, affordable shelter.

In October 2022, Aayesha Gandhi worked with Habitat for Humanity to expand their operational store that provides affordable supplies for those in need. This is her story.

Q: What did you like most about your experience?

A: It was incredibly easy to sign up and show up. The registration process and onboarding process was simple and made it a very good experience.

Q: What did you like least about your experience?

A: I just wish I had more time to work with them.

Q: Why did you choose to work with Habitat for Humanity?

A: I was interested in the concept of helping people improve their homes at a very minimal cost.

Q: What were your responsibilities?

A: I was helping expand a new section of the Habitat for Humanity store.

Q: What impact did your volunteer experience have on others?

A: I worked closely with one of the employees who really appreciated all of my help racking clothes. It was almost empty when we started!

Q: What other causes are you passionate about?

A: I’m passionate about the work that Women’s shelters are doing in the community and for the people they serve.

Q: What was your key takeaway from the experience?

A: Even though I was there for a brief period of time, I felt that I was able to accomplish a lot and make an impact on the store!
